Choosing the Right Sewing Machine for You
Selection and variety are good, but having so many options can also make it confusing to make a decision. So it is for choosing the right sewing machine. There are several sewing machine manufacturers, and each one has several lines of sewing machines with several models in each line. This article first reviews the history of America's premier sewing machine manufacturer: Singer Sewing Co. It then discusses several lines, models, and features of Singer sewing machines for sale.
Singer has been manufacturing home sewing machinesfor almost 160 years. Singer was founded in 1851 by Isaac Merritt Singer. Singer's revolutionary innovations made it the leading manufacturer of sewing machines in the United States with two short years. Singer has never stopped innovating since that time. No other company has contributed nearly as much to the evolution and improvement of the sewing machine as Singer Sewing Co. Two of Singer's most recent innovations are the SwiftSmart ThreadingTM System and Drop & SewTM Bobbin System, which make tedious threading and bobbin tasks a breeze so you can spend more time getting creative with your sewing.
Singer sewing machines are well-built and made to last. And every singer sewing machine for sale is backed by a 25-year limited warranty. Singer has also focused on making its sewing machines easy to operate, even for beginners. Many features on singer sewing machines are accessible with the touch of a single button, and Singer has made menial, time-consuming tasks like threading the machine and loading the bobbin both fast and fool-proof.
Singer has a wide selection of sewing machines: from starter sewing machines for beginners to highly sophisticated embroidery sewing machines for avid sewers. Let's break them down into a few categories, and then we'll look at some of the models within each category. The main categories of sewing machines are:
1) Embroidery sewing machines– these machines can “talk" to your computer to turn a complex design you create using embroidery software into a home-made work of art in a matter of minutes
2) Electronic sewing machines –– these machines have time-saving “electronic" features, such as single-button selections, automatic needle threaders, automatic buttonholing, drop feed, etc.
3) Basic sewing machines – these machines are still electric-powered, of course, but they don't have as many electronic buttons and automated features
Singer's product lines generally coincide with the categories of sewing machines above. The Futura line is Singer's line of embroidery sewing machines. The following lines are electronic sewing machines: Curvy, Confidence, Touch & Sew, Advance, Ingenuity, Precision, as well as a handful of other machines. And these lines are basic Singer sewing machines: Inspiration, Esteem, and Simple.
Within each product line, there are usually several sewing machine models. For example, the Confidence line has the following electronic sewing machines: 7463 Confidence, 7465 Confidence, 7467 Confidence, 7469 Confidence, and 7470 Confidence. Within a particular product line (such as the Confidence product line), the higher the number, the better the sewing machine in terms of features, capabilities, stitch options, etc. Note that this rule does not necessarily apply when comparing one line of sewing machines to another line.
To illustrate, let's compare the 7467 Confidence to the 7469 Confidence. Among other differences, the 7469 has 98 stitch patterns, 7 one-step buttonholes, and 12 frequent-use buttons whereas the 7467 has only 70 stitch patterns, 3 one-step buttonholes, and 6 frequent-use buttons.
Some people assume that a higher model number correlates to a higher difficulty of use. Generally, that is not true. And in many cases, the opposite is true. Higher model numbers (within a product line) have more features and options, but oftentimes those upgraded features actually make operating the sewing machine faster and easier, not more complex.

The Xyron Personal Cutting System - A Review
There are a lot of scrapbooking products available, from the books themselves to stickers, appliques, and other supplies. One device that could potentially make this particular craft more enjoyable is the Xyron Personal Cutting system, a die cutter that creates shapes for use in all kinds of paper crafts and other creative projects. Here are the strengths and weaknesses of this machine.
Strengths:
- The Personal Cutting System is a computerized die cutter than can cut out designs and letters for use in a variety of different crafts, such as scrapbooks and greeting cards.
- There are literally hundreds of designs and fonts you can cut with this machine. They can be found in Xyron design books that work with the machine in much the same way a diskette would work with a PC. The machine itself comes with two books to get you started and after that, you can purchase the additional books if you want. Some of the books have specialized designs that would be great for using on holiday cards or creating vacation photo albums.
- You can use both thin and thick paper with this device. You can even use 80 lb. cardstock if you need to make something sturdy. Just make sure the paper measures 4" x 4" before placing it in the paper tray. You can make small, medium, and large cut-outs with your paper, with the largest ones being slightly smaller than the above dimensions.
- This device was designed to be portable so you can use it while crafting with a group of friends. Xyron has even put out a specialized tote bag for this product that is sold separately.
- This cutting tool comes with a one-year warranty.
Weaknesses:
- One of the first things you will likely notice about this machine is that is pink, as is the carrying bag that is sold separately. While some users won't mind - or will actually like - the color, other potential users might not be so enamored of it. For example, because of the color, it's difficult to see this product appealing to boys and men.
- Although this machine comes with two design books, if you really want a variety of shapes and fonts, you'll need to purchase additional books. The books cost approximately $19.99 each so if you want a lot of design options, it will cost you a lot of money, unfortunately.
- This device is pretty well-constructed, but you should be aware that if you use your machine a lot - and especially if you cut a lot of thicker papers - the blade will need to be replaced.
- This machine doesn't have the capability of letting you design your own die cut shapes. Although the design books have a lot of different designs to offer, you might feel somewhat hampered by the selection, especially if you're really creative.
- The price of this device could be a pro or con depending on your budget and if the machine is right for you. It retails for $89.99. As mentioned before, additional design books will cost extra.
Overall, the Xyron Personal Cutting System is a bit of a mixed bag. While it's great that there are so many design books available, they're a bit pricey, and plus, you can't create your own designs. The device is easy to use and it's nice that it's so portable, but again, the color might turn off some potential users. In the end, this device would be good for die-hard crafters (especially scrapbookers) who can live with the color and limitations of this cutting system.

aligning images when printing to die cut sheets?
Lets say I have one *.jpg image I reduce to 1/2" square.
I first go to a die cutter who die cuts 50 - 1/2" squares into an 8.5 X 11 sheet of adhesive back photo paper white.
Assuming each sheet is die cut exactly alike to keep each square on some dimensional exactness.
Then I have align and print 50 images to exactly fit into spaces cut into sheets. So I can later peel off each image.
Which software is best to adjust each image to fit in space die cut.
thanks
You can do this in Adobe Photoshop (using a grid) or Illustrator or import the .jpg into a layout application such as Quark or InDesign.
The problem is you'll need bleed space around the images to account for small shifts in the paper when cutting. Ask your printer about the amount of space they'll need; it may be as much as 1/16 of an inch. If you scale the images to exactly 1/2" and then cut to that size, the image will be cut into on some or will have a tiny bit of white space on others. There are no cutters which are so precise and which keeps sheets of paper totally still.

Pleural Thickening and Profusion Resulting From Asbestos Exposure
Asbestos exposure is a known cause of cancer. A plethora of research has been done in the past to establish causation. One interesting study is called, "Asbestos exposure and asbestos-related pleural and parenchymal disease associations with immune imbalance" by Sprince NL, Oliver LC, McLoud TC, Eisen EA, Christiani DC, Ginns LC - Am Rev Respir Dis. 1991 Apr;143(4 Pt 1):822-8. Medical Services Pulmonary and Critical Care Unit, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts. Here is an excerpt: "Abstract - The study hypothesis was that asbestos exposure and asbestos-related pleural plaques and interstitial disease are associated with (1) immune imbalances favoring helper-inducer T-cell subsets in blood and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) and (2) T-lymphocyte accumulation in BAL. One hundred twenty-two asbestos-exposed subsets (AES), including 27 nonsmokers (NS), were evaluated and compared with 10 unexposed normal subjects. Data were collected on medical, smoking, and occupational histories, physical examination, spirometry, lung volumes, single-breath DLCO, chest films read by a "B" reader, and T-lymphocyte characterization in blood and BAL using flow cytometry analysis of monoclonal-antibody-treated cells. On average, AES were 47 yr of age and had 23 yr of asbestos exposure. Fifty-eight (48%) had pleural thickening, and seven (6%) had profusion greater than or equal to 1/0. In blood, asbestos-exposed NS had lower total and percent CD8 and lower total CD3 than did normal subjects. In BAL, asbestos-exposed NS had higher total CD3 than did normal subjects. Among AES, increased asbestos exposure was associated with increased percent CD8 in BAL and decreases in both percent lymphocytes and total CD8 in blood. Increase in CD4/CD8 ratio in BAL were associated with pleural thickening. In those seven with profusion greater than or equal to 1/0, there was increased percent CD4 in blood and decreased percent CD8 in BAL. These results suggest immune imbalance favoring helper-inducer T-cell subsets in association with asbestos exposure systemically and with pleural plaques in BAL."
A second study is called, "Changing attitudes and opinions regarding asbestos and cancer 1934-1965" by Enterline PE. Department of Biostatistics, Graduate School of Public Health, University of Pittsburgh, PA 15261. Am J Ind Med. 1991;20(5):685-700. Here is an excerpt: "Literature published in the years 1934-1965 was reviewed to determine attitudes and opinions of scientists as to whether asbestos is a cause of cancer. In Germany, the issue was decided in 1943 when the government decreed that lung cancer, when associated with asbestosis (of any degree), was an occupational disease. In the United States, however, there was no consensus on the issue until 1964. Opinions of scientists over a 22 year period are shown and the contributions of various cultural, social, economic and political factors to these opinions are discussed. A lack of experimental and epidemiological evidence played a major role in delaying a consensus. Other important factors included a rejection of science conducted outside of the U.S. during this period, particularly a rejection of German scientific thought during and after WWII, and a rejection of clinical evidence in favor of epidemiological investigations. Individual writers rarely changed their minds on the subject of asbestos as a cause of cancer."
If you found any of these studies interesting, please read them in their entirety. We all owe a great deal of thanks to the people who are researching these important issues.

Exposure unit waste of money?
I wanna start doing screenprinting again to make prints/posters I learned to do this in college off of a pretty heavy duty exposure unit with a vac. Is this technology really necessary, or can I do really professional quality prints with a homemade lightbox?
Great question.
I've done a lot of screen printing since I learned in college using around the house materials.
The big issue is not the vacuum exposure unit for me, but the toxic nature of the inks, and other chemicals.
So now I use tube watercolor as my ink and instead of trying to wash out the stencils from a screen, I simply wash out the water-based ink and then store and reuse the screen.
To save money on screens, I use sheer polyester curtain material from a discount store. I stretch it and staple it to old wood picture frames.
There is a wealth of great screen printing information on instructables.com -
