how to build tower using only popsicle sticks and rubber bands?
it has to hold 1 ream paper on top. Tallest tower wins. we get 200 sticks and about a cup full of rubber bands. We spent hours on this and cant figure it out. please help.
Stacking clumps doesnt work.
His hint was the sticks hold the most weight when they are vertical.
I am not speaking as if I have ever had to do this before, but I am an engineering student and this is my best guess. I would start with a base shaped like a triangle(vs. square to get the max height with the materials provided), then attatch 3 vertical uprights at the corners of the base. Make another triangle, attach to vertical uprights the same way the base was attached. Continue building your model until you are out of popsicle sticks. Based on the math of 200 divided by 6 you should be able to make your model just over 30 floors high. The biggest challenge will be to get the rubberbands to hold the joints tight enough to support the structure.
Before you even begin I would multiply the length of a popsicle stick by 30 and determine if the overall height will be too much for the strength of the structure. It kinda sounds like it will. If so just do the exact same procedure starting out with a square instead of a triangle. This should give you just under 25 floors and that sounds more realistic considering the strength of a square shaped structure. After all the world tallest structures are cubic. Good luck and happy modeling!
