HELP I dont get this math question, what should I do IM COMPLETLY LOST?
A box of paper is 5 reams deep. A ream has 500 sheets of paper. About how many cuts would you need to make a stack at least as thick as this box of paper.
The same goes for this question.
An eiffel tower is approx. 1050 feet tall. If you had a big enough peice of paper. how mant cuts would you need to have a stack that equals or exceeds this height
My teacher wont help, and my friends are having the same trouble with these type of question. Someone help.
for each cut you make on the paper you double the amount you have (cut through the entire stack. then place one half on the other. then when you cut the second time you cut BOTH stacks...)
So count in reams instead of sheets of paper (it'll make it easier):
5 reams. 1 ream of paper
cut once:
1ream*2 per cut = 2 reams of paper
cut twice:
2reams * 2 per cut = 4 reams of paper
cut thrice:
4reams * 2 per cut = 8 reams of paper.
Therefore you require ONLY 3 cuts to reach this. To make a pattern I'll rewrite the above using a different method (*exponents*)
5 reams. 1 ream of paper
cut once:
(1 starting # of reams) * (2per-cut)^1(# of cuts) = 2 reams of paper.
cut twice:
(1 starting # of reams) * (2per-cut)^2(# of cuts) = 4 reams of paper.
cut thrice:
(1 starting # of reams) * (2per-cut)^3(# of cuts) = 8 reams of paper.
so you see, you have a number of reams of paper equal to 2^(#cuts) you've made.
assume the eiffel tower is 1050 feet, and the ream of paper is 1/6ft. that means you have 6300reams to cut up to. find the number of cuts so that your answer is >6300
2^4 = 16
2^5 = 32
2^8 = 256
2^10 = 1024
2^12 = 4096
2^13 = 8192
13 cuts would be required because 2^13 > 6300
