Laminating is the process of sealing a document between to plastic sleeves so that they become waterproof and resistant to damage. In order to laminate a document, you require a special machine known as a laminator. This machine will coat the document in a thin plastic covering known as laminating film.
There are a vast range of laminators available to buy, each with their own strength and weaknesses. Prices vary depending on the type of machine, their size and their various features. The better brands are also typically priced higher than the less well known ones.
If you want a laminator for personal use at home or in a small office, then a pouch laminator is what you should look into. These types of laminating machines are very affordable and are smaller than the larger commercial types. A pouch laminator uses heat to place lamination pouches over the document.
Hot roll laminators are larger than pouch laminators and are most often used in bigger offices or in schools. They tend to work quicker than pouch laminators and can do a number of documents in a short space of time. They also use heat to seal the document in plastic.
Cold laminators are used for documents that may be damaged by heat. They don't use any hot working parts. Instead, the film as a adhesive back which sticks to the paper when a cold roller is run over the top by the machine.
Which laminator you buy will depend on what you will use it for. If you do lots of laminating then a large, heavy duty heat laminator is probably best. However, if you will be doing lots of small jobs then a pouch laminator should do just fine.
