As experienced craft show participants already know, most all shows charge extra for electricity in a rented booth space. Sometimes the cost is minimal and sometimes it is not. Should you pay for electricity at a craft show?
Well, that depends on several factors. The main consideration is whether or not you actually need it.
* Do you have payment processing equipment that requires electricity?
* Do you paint or perform on site work that requires electrical power?
* Does your booth design incorporate lighting and other items that require electricity?
Some craft shows are held indoors and some are held outside. Some of the interior shows do not charge extra for power because it is more readily available and more convenient.
Another consideration regarding booth utilities is the time of the year and the location where the show is held. If the weather will be cold and the show is outdoors, you might want power so you can run a small heater to keep warm or operate a heating pad for your chair.
If you sell food items that require refrigeration, warming, or cooking on site, then you will most likely need to pay the additional fee for electricity.
Some vendors do screen printing and perform computer applications on site, and again, unless they have a portable generator, electricity might be something they require for the operation of their booth.
If you do plan to utilize a generator, you should be sure it is allowed by checking with the show sponsors ahead of time. Some generators can be quite noisy, also, and that could detract from the selling appeal of your craft show booth space.
Some craft vendors perform several tasks on site that require power, and these often include routing, sawing, spray painting, and power sanding. Other vendors perform applications on computers that require design and printing of materials on site, such as greeting cards, calendars, and photographs.
Having electricity is most times an added convenience to any craft booth space, but if you do a lot of shows, the associated expensive for craft booth electricity can add up and eat into your profits.
If it is necessary to have this added convenience for your booth area to function properly, then there is no question that you should opt for it. For everyone else, it is a personal decision as to whether the benefits outweigh the expense. Only you know what is best for your business. Happy Crafting!
