The use of graphics for creating web pages and presentations adds a dramatic impact to it, much like dressing up a Christmas tree. The graphics bring to life, in vivid colors what the text has to convey, creating a lasting impression upon the mind of the net surfer. A good, eye-catching web site will have a harmonious blend of text, graphics, color, font and layout. A Graphics card, also going by the name of video card, graphics accelerator or graphics adapter is that component of the computer responsible for reading and converting digital data into graphics which the monitor displays.

While creating graphics for a web page, you are faced with two options. Either you import a picture or you create one and this requires some graphic software installed on your computer. You need a creative mind and some great ideas to get you started on creating some swell pictures, logos, illustrations and decorative images along with some informative text in fonts that merge well with the images you intend using on the web page.

The graphic files that are created, are saved either as vector drawing (lines and curves) file format with extensions like.EPS.AI,.CDR and.SWF or as a bitmap file(image file format storing digital images) having extensions like.BMP or.DIB. Vector graphics do not attain the high level of refinement and detail as bitmapped images. These file formats are recognized by browsers which then translate the data into pictures and images on the web pages.

The computer recognizes the bitmapped image as a matrix of numbers each corresponding to or defining a single screen pixel. A pixel is a single square of color and is the smallest visual element of the display screen. Millions of screen pixels are arranged on a 2 dimensional grid on the screen and when these are viewed together we see the real world image. Individual pixels become visible when the image is highly magnified to about 500%, as tiny little squares of color.

Web graphics is poised for a giant leap as browsers continue to develop and improve upon the support for existing and newer file formats.

You should be able to get away with a gif, but if you're not happy with gifs then try a png format.
