Addition of vectors in physics?
Okay I know how to add vectors but my problem is, I don't know how to find the value of theta. For example, when you add vector A + B and let's say vector A is 100m/s @ 130 deg and vector B is 120m/s at 330 deg. You use the formula
tan (theta) = y/x, and when you find the angle, you have to know when to add 180 degrees afterwards. So my question is when do you do that and how do you know for sure? Do you always have to graph the vectors to see that or is there an easier way that will guarantee you to have the correct angel at all times?
the value of tanθ = y/x is true ONLY when you resolve the vectors along the x and y components and then add them up to find the resultant x and y components. If you do that much then you have to draw some sort of figure, atleast in your head. The shortcut (without resolving the vectors) is the following formula
tanθ = Q*sinΦ / (P + Q*cosΦ)
here Φ is the angle between the two vectors and θ is the angle that the resultant makes with the vector P In your problem you can easily find the angle Φ by subtracting A from B and when you get the resultant angle just add it to A to get the answer
